Counterfeit air bags called 'extreme safety risk'

This is one of the many reasons why car owners should have their vehicles serviced and their body work done at an authorized dealership with factory trained professionals. Keeler Motor Car Company follows all manufacturer's guidelines when repairing your Honda, Mercedes-Benz, BMW, MINI, smart and Sprinter vehicles.

Counterfeit air bags called 'extreme safety risk'
October 10, 2012 2:55 PM ET
By JOAN LOWY

WASHINGTON (AP) - Thousands of motorists may be driving cars and trucks installed with dangerous counterfeit bags and they should have them replaced at their own expense, the Obama administration warned Wednesday.
Most at risk are motorists who have had their airbags replaced over the past three years by a repair shop other than a new car dealership, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration officials said.
Only 0.1 percent of the U.S. vehicle fleet — about 250,000 cars on the road — are makes and models for which counterfeit airbags are known to be available, NHTSA said. Auto industry officials briefed by the agency said they were told that tens of thousands of car owners may be driving vehicles with counterfeit airbags.
In government tests last month of 11 counterfeit bags, 10 didn't inflate or failed to inflate properly. In one test, a counterfeit bag shot flames and shards of metal shrapnel at a crash dummy instead of inflating, said NHTSA Administrator David Strickland, who showed a video of the test at a news conference.
"It is an extreme safety risk," he said.
NHTSA is asking car owners to check a government website, www.Safercar.gov, for information on how to contact auto manufacturer call centers to learn if their vehicle model is among those for which counterfeit airbags are known to have been made.
No deaths or injuries have been tied to the counterfeit bags, NHTSA said. But it's unclear whether police accident investigators would be able to identify a counterfeit bag from a genuine one, industry officials said.
About 1.5 million airbags are deployed each year in police-reported tow-away crashes, Clarence Ditlow, executive director of the Center for Auto Safety, said.
"Airbags save several thousands of lives annually. But they can't save lives if they have not been repaired properly," he said.
NHTSA has compiled a list of dozens of vehicle makes and models for which counterfeit airbags may be available, but the agency cautioned that the full scope of the problem isn't clear yet and the list is expected to "evolve over time."
If a car model is on the list and has had its airbags replaced during the past three years by a repair shop other than a new car dealership, NHTSA is asking owners to take the vehicle into a dealership or repair shop to be inspected at their own expense to determine whether the replaced airbags are counterfeit.
Fees for checking out airbags — a complex and technical process — could run between $100 to $200, said Bailey Wood, a spokesman for the National Automobile Dealers Association, said. The cost of replacing a driver's side center column airbag is $750 to $1,000, he said. Other airbags may be more, he said. Some types of cars have as many as eight airbags.
The problem isn't the result of a manufacturing defect by automakers and isn't a recall, NHTSA and industry officials said.
"The bad actor here is the counterfeiters," Wood said. "Because of that, the cost to have an airbag evaluated and possibly replaced is going to be borne by the consumer."
The counterfeit bags typically look like airbags made by automakers and usually include a manufacturer's logo. Government investigators believe many of the bags come from China, an industry official said.
The bags are marketed to auto repair and body shops as the real deal, industry officials said. Auto dealerships that operate their own body shops are usually required by their franchise agreements to buy their parts, including airbags, directly from automakers and therefore are unlikely to have installed counterfeit bags, industry officials said.
But only 37 percent of auto dealers have their own body shops, according to the automobile dealers association. Many consumers whose vehicles have been damaged are referred by their insurance companies to auto body shops that aren't affiliated with an automaker.
Consumers who bought replacement airbags online or who have purchased a used car that may have its airbags replaced in the past three years were also asked to check NHTSA's list.
Counterfeiting of a wide variety of auto parts has long been a well-known problem, industry officials said. But recent incidents have escalated concern by government officials. In August, federal agents confiscated nearly 1,600 counterfeit airbags and arrested a North Carolina auto mechanic, according to a report by the Charlotte Observer. The mechanic was tied by federal officials to another counterfeit airbag case last year in Tennessee, the report said.
Dai Zhensong, a Chinese citizen, pleaded guilty and was sentenced in federal court in Chattanooga, Tenn., last February to 37 months in prison for trafficking in counterfeit airbags, according to a statement made at the time by the U.S. Attorney's Office.
Zhensong was a part owner and manager of the international department of Guangzhou Auto Parts, which made a variety of auto parts, many of which were counterfeit, the statement said. In 2010, he traveled from China to Chattanooga to sell additional counterfeit airbags and other auto parts.
The counterfeit airbags were manufactured by purchasing genuine auto airbags that were torn down and used to make molds to produce the counterfeit bags. Trademark emblems were purchased through Honda, Toyota, Audi, BMW and other dealerships located in China and affixed to the counterfeit airbags. The airbags were advertised on the Guangzhou Auto Parts website and sold for approximately $50 to $70 each, far below the value of an authentic airbag, the statement said.
About 2,500 counterfeit airbags have been seized by law enforcement authorities so far this year, John Morton, director of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, told reporters. Investigations are under way in several locations around the country, and further arrests and seizures are expected, he said.

2012 Honda Civic voted Top Ten Best Green Car by Kelley Blue Book

According to Kelley Blue Book, this year’s Honda Civic ranked as one of the top ten best green cars of 2012. This is great news for all consumers, especially given the rise in the cost of fuel. Even though the new sedan is extremely fuel efficient, this was not enough to win the ranking. Other qualities such as comfort, general features and of course, consumer value helped to rank the auto amongst the top ten.
According to Art St. Cyr, vice president of corporate planning for American Honda, “The 2012 Honda Civic sedan is the complete package for any consumer, and one that also provides a host of fuel-efficient powertrain options. We’re delighted that Kelley Blue Book’s kbb.com editors acknowledged the most versatile offering in the class.”
When the editors of Kelley Blue Book were asked about their Honda choice, they said, “The Civic has long been the vanilla ice cream of compact sedans; it’s easy to fall back on due to its remarkable reliability and exceptional value. But for 2012, the Civic has evolved into more of a Neapolitan option as it presents a choice of three different engine types: gasoline, natural gas and hybrid gas/electric. Considering all of them achieve nearly 40 highway mpg or better, the Civic is an excellent choice no matter what flavor you pick.”
Click here to take a look at Keeler Honda Civic inventory.  Or you can always stop in and take a test drive!  Keeler Honda is located at 1111 Troy-Schenectady Rd. in Latham, NY.

The Evolution of the BMW logo

I came across this article today while perusing Twitter feeds.  I have worked at Keeler Motor Car Company and Keeler BMW for 10 years now and never knew how the logo originated.  I guess the old saying is true, "You learn something new everyday!"

BMW logo evolution

BMW badge 2011
The four-minute video embedded below (email subscribers can view it on-site) talks about the origins of the BMW logo, dispelling the myth that the emblem was created around aircraft propellers.
The following info was transcripted from the video:

Aircraft engines are the origin of the myth. People think that the BMW logo is based on a rotating airscrew. The origin of this interpretation is the cover of a BMW aircraft magazine. This picture (shown below) was taken in 1929, years after the logo first came into existence. Respect for the publicity department back then for the fact that the airscrew myth continues today.

1929 BMW aircraft magazine cover illustration (close-up)
But what’s really behind the origin of the logo? For those who are trying to answer this question unavoidably come across the aircraft engine manufacturer Rapp.
“As Rapp grew into BMW, BMW assumed all the business segments, and the company wanted the logo to be oriented on Rapp’s logo. As you can see here on this example, Rapp has a black horse as a symbol on its logo. BMW chose the Bavarian national colours as a symbol, but arranged the letters exactly like Rapp. So you can see very clearly how the BMW logo was developed.”

The All-New BMW 3 Series Sedan Earns "Top Safety Pick" from IIHS

All-New BMW 3 Series Sedan Earns “Top Safety Pick” from IIHS
Newest sports sedan continues BMW long tradition of class-leading safety.

Woodcliff Lake, NJ – May 21, 2012 10:00am EDT …
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety today named the all-new 2012 BMW 3 Series Sedan a “Top Safety Pick,” continuing the company’s long-standing commitment to offering class-leading safety with each new model. In order to earn “Top Safety Pick,” a car must receive a rating of “good,” the Institute’s highest rating, in all of four tests – 40 mph frontal offset impact, side impact, rear impact protection/head restraint and rollover protection – and must be equipped with an electronic stability control system like BMW’s Dynamic Stability Control.

“The new 3 Series is a testament to BMW’s long tradition of passenger safety, as well as to the men and women who engineer and build them,” noted Tom Baloga – Vice-President, Engineering (US) for BMW. “While we remain committed to providing the best possible passenger protection, we believe that the best crash is the one avoided. The new 3 Series offers even more active safety technology, firmly rooted in the dynamics and handling that have made it the quintessential sports sedan through six generations.”

The newest crash test being conducted by the Institute as part of its overall evaluation is the rollover protection test. Rollover ratings assess vehicle roof strength for protection in rollover crashes. To measure roof strength, a metal plate is pushed against one corner of a vehicle’s roof at a constant speed. The maximum force sustained by the roof before 5 inches of crush is compared to the vehicle’s weight to find the strength-to-weight ratio.

Keeler BMW receives another amazing testimonial

We don't like to toot our own horn at Keeler Motor Car but we certainly LOVE it when our customers do it for us.  Mark from Virginia did just that:

I just want to say thank you for your great service in an emergency. I live in Alexandria, Virginia, and was visiting my father in Schenectady over the weekend when I hit a very bad pothole on the way up and busted the sidewall of a runflat front tire on my BMW 3351. It hobbled along but clearly need replacement before I could return home. I've come to expect great service from BMW in my area but wasnt sure what I'd find when I showed up at your service bay door at 7:30 on Monday. What I found was fast and efficient service, a tire in stock, and a great young rep -- was it Sean? It was early -- who handled it from start to finish. I was thrilled with your ability to help me get home to Virginia in the afternoon and happy to see that the great service for whcih BMW has developed a name was running on all cylinders at your place. You have a great crew and I much appreciate it. Thanks again, Mark S.

Introducing the newly designed 2013 Honda Accord

Honda Motor Co. today unveiled an Accord Coupe Concept that foreshadows the styling of the production car set to arrive this year against stiffening competition.
The concept, shown at the Detroit auto show, sports a creased beltline, muscular rear fender and aggressive lower fog lights. Powertrain improvements will be a key selling point for the 2013 Accord, Honda says.
After the Accord's 17 percent drop in U.S. sales last year, Honda is counting on the next Accord to take on freshly redesigned mid-sized rivals, including the Toyota Camry, Nissan Altima, Hyundai Sonata, Ford Fusion and Chevrolet Malibu.
The coupe will be the same size as the current model. But the sedan will have a smaller footprint than today's version, with a shorter wheelbase and lower curb weight for better handling and enhanced fuel economy.
Interior space will stay the same, Honda pledges.
The timing of the sedan's U.S. launch hasn't been released.
The Accord's U.S. sales decline last year, to 235,625, stemmed largely from supply shortages following Japan's March 11 earthquake.
That dropped it to fourth place in the segment, behind the Camry, Fusion and Altima. The Camry held onto its No. 1 spot despite dropping 6 percent to 308,510 units, also because of supply shortages after the earthquake.
Honda needs a strong showing from the Accord after its redesigned Civic small car received a chilly reception last year for what critics said was a cheap-looking interior.
American Honda's total U.S. sales fell 7 percent in a market that increased 10 percent.
New powertrains
The Accord will feature three new drivetrains.
The first will feature the initial U.S. use of the next-generation, direct-injection engine that Honda unveiled in late November at the Tokyo Motor Show. The so-called Earth Dreams engine, a 2.4-liter, 16-valve, DOHC i-VTEC four banger, will be combined with a new continuously variable transmission.
The engine delivers 181 hp and better fuel economy than the Accord's current base powerplant, an inline four. Honda did not release fuel-economy figures but said the engine aims to achieve class-leading mileage.
The second drivetrain will consist of a re-engineered 3.5-liter, 24-valve, SOHC i-VTEC V-6 engine paired with either a new six-speed automatic transmission or an existing six-speed manual. The automatic will achieve better fuel economy and horsepower than the outgoing model, Honda says.
The final variant is the first use of Honda's two-motor, plug-in hybrid system. In all-electric mode, the system's lithium ion battery and motor can power the car for up to 15 miles of city driving at speeds as high as 62 mph. The battery can be fully recharged in four hours using a 120-volt outlet or in 90 minutes with a 240-volt charger, Honda says.
For longer drives, the hybrid operates in gasoline-electric mode, drawing from a 2.0-liter, four-cylinder, Atkinson-cycle engine combined with a CVT. For high-speed cruising, the car can run in gasoline-only mode with the engine directly powering the front wheels.
The Accord Plug-in Hybrid will go on sale in the winter of 2012, Honda says.
Honda canceled the previous Accord hybrid at the end of its 2007 model year.
Safety features
Honda says the next Accord also will sport several new safety features.
It will have Honda's first lane-departure warning system and first forward-crash warning technology. Both use cameras mounted behind the windshield to alert drivers of dangers.
It also will get Honda's first use of its LaneWatch blind spot display, which uses a camera mounted on the passenger mirror to keep tabs on that side of the car.
A multiangle rearview camera also will come standard.
Other new standard features in the next Accord:
• Bluetooth hands-free phone interface.
• Full color information display.
• An SMS texting function that reads messages aloud.

Keeler Motor Car Customer Testimonials

Hear what some of our customers have said about Keeler Motor Car recently:

"My Dealer is Keeler!"

Between my wife and I, this will be the fourth vehicle purchase from Keeler Motor Car Company (BMW and Mercedes-Benz.)  The staffs that attended to us during these purchases and services have been exceptionally professional and trained to get the job done.  We are a "Keelerian", that is, "Keeler Family Member" for over ten years now.  I hope you don't mind me coining the word!  You could bank on it that we had and will continue to spread the good news about Keeler to family and friends particularly when purchasing certified Mercedes-Benz.  You are the best in that category!!
Emmanuel

"Exceeded my experiences!"

The people in the service department at Keeler Honda are so nice!  I bought my 2010 Honda Accord last Spring (sales dept was great too!) and have been in contact with Service only twice but both times have exceeded my experiences with other service departments in the way I have been treated.  I'm bringing my car in for a software update this week and can only assume we'll keep this 100% customer satisfaction streak going!
LuAnn

"Why go anywhere else but Keeler Motor Car"

It is always a pleasure to deal with the people at Keeler Motor Car.  you know they will always be helpful no matter what!  We often think of buying another type of car but Keeler makes us so happy so why go anywhere else?
Barry

"I LOVE Reggae music!"

Dear Andrea,
Quite a few years ago I went to a Jimmy Cliff concert at Middlebury College, and after an opening act, he came on stage to a crowd of 10,000 screaming, adoring fans.  When he finally got people somewhat quiet, he said:  "I don't like reggae music..."

You've never heard a crowd of 10,000 go silent faster.  Long pause...then he said, "I LOVE Reggae music."
The place exploded!

That's how I feel about my new MINI Cooper - i don't just like it.  It's the best handling car I've ever owned, and over the years I've had two MG's , a 1967 Morgan Plus 4, A Range Rover, and an early Miata that was a knock off of the Lotus Elan.  (The Morgan could take sharp curves at high speeds with out flinching, although the creature comforts were rather minimal.)
In any case, I am very impressed with everything about the MINI.  The fit and finish seems perfect, and, as everyone says, it is just pure fun to drive!  (It wanted to zip up the 85 on the Northway, and I am going to have to watch the speedometer as it just seems to want to go faster.)
Please accept my thanks for all your help in making this happen.  From order to delivery, it was incredibly quick and the whole experience of picking it up at Keeler MINI was a pleasure!  Kevin made the paperwork painless and your introduction to all the dashboard intricacies was brilliant!  Cheers!

"Thank you Keeler Mercedes-Benz"

I want to thank all the associates at Keeler Mercedes-Benz for their diligent efforts in restoring my 1986 Mercedes-Benz 560 SL back to health.  It is now operating safely, comfortably and reliably.  They all went the extra mile to service my classic automobile and looked after items I did know about.  Thank you!!

"Thank you all so much"

Dear Bill, Andrea and Raffe,

I love doing business with friends and hopefully I don't drive a hard bargain? just a great little black cooper that I LOVE!!! You guys were and are great and will always receive a 10 out of 10 recommendation for professional service and attention to detail. You made the past 8 years easy, the purchase simple, the new guy I met in finance was great also and I long to look after you guys in Placid with beers and accommodation as availability allows.

It has been a great first 8 years with Keeler and this relationship will continue if the service is half as good as I'm getting! I salute you all.

Best regards,
Stuart

"Keeler BMW's wonderful service"

I would just like to comment on the wonderful Service Dept. at Keeler BMW and mainly your employee Raffe. He was more than helpful at the last visit and really listened to my car's issues and they were corrected in the best and most friendly manner than any of the other Service Reps I have dealt with this year. My hat is off to Raffe and Mini Service Department.
